The SCENIC 500, formerly known as the Ticino 500, is an Alpine ultra-endurance raid covering approximately 500 kilometres with 40,000 metres of elevation gain. But focusing solely on the numbers would be a mistake. Other events may cover a similar distance, certainly, but comparing them based on kilometres alone is rather like claiming that a mountain road and a motorway are the same thing simply because both eventually lead somewhere.
The SCENIC 500 is technically far more demanding than its distance might suggest. The route crosses genuine Alpine terrain: often steep, challenging and remote. Here, you will not find a refreshment station around every corner, a folding chair whenever you feel tired, or someone ready to serve your favourite flavour of lukewarm broth the moment you pull a sad face.
The checkpoints are widely spaced, and everything between them belongs entirely to you. This means intelligently managing your water, food, equipment, sleep, navigation, weather conditions and unexpected problems. It means being capable of continuing without outside assistance and without the conveniences that, at many events, turn “self-sufficiency” into a short stroll between two buffets.
The event also includes two “shorter” distances of approximately 300 and 30 kilometres. The word shorter, when applied to a 300-kilometre Alpine raid, should naturally be understood with the peculiar sense of humour shared by its organisers. Both distances follow the same philosophy and offer athletes a gradual introduction to an older and more authentic vision of trail running.
We are referring to that romantic age when people did not run along trails to collect qualifying points, photograph the refreshment tables or follow a live ranking. They ran because something with much larger teeth might have been chasing them and considering turning them into a convenient high-protein snack. It was a simple, natural and remarkably effective motivational system.
Unfortunately, wild animals are not included in the entry fee. Everything else is: solitude, fatigue, self-reliance, genuine nature and the feeling of once again being a creature capable of surviving through its own abilities.
These distances are intended for those who want to rediscover a genuine connection with the mountains, far from trails travelled in procession with hundreds of people ahead and just as many behind. If you enjoy spending several hours admiring the backpack of the runner in front of you, many other events will suit you perfectly. Here, we want to offer something rarer: space, silence, responsibility and the very real opportunity to wonder what on earth made you sign up.
The SCENIC 500 and its shorter distances are not designed for anyone looking for an easy medal, a domesticated course or continuous assistance. They are reserved for true lovers of ultra-endurance — or, more precisely, for those ready to enter the realm of beyond ultra: people who do not merely want to cover a distance, but who wish to face a complete test of endurance, mental clarity, self-reliance and adaptability.
No shortcuts, no special conveniences and no personal butler hiding behind a larch tree. Just you, the mountains and a line to follow.
The SCENIC 500 does not promise to make things easy. It offers something far rarer: a genuine adventure, difficult to explain to anyone who has not experienced it and impossible to forget for those who make it all the way to the finish.
If you are looking for an ordinary ultramarathon, you have probably chosen the wrong event.
If you are looking for what comes after ultra, welcome to the SCENIC 500.
Where ultra ends, the wild begins.
